What is Lebanese Mix Spice (Baharat)?
Lebanese Mix Spice, commonly known as Baharat or Lebanese Seven Spice, is a traditional Middle Eastern spice blend used to season meat, chicken, rice, soups, stews and vegetables. While recipes can vary between families and regions, Baharat typically combines warming spices such as allspice, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger and fenugreek.
It is one of the most essential spices in Lebanese cooking and is known for its fragrant aroma and rich, savoury flavour.
What does Baharat taste like?
Baharat has a warm, aromatic flavour with subtle notes of sweetness from spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, balanced by the earthy warmth of black pepper and allspice. It is not spicy or hot, making it suitable for the whole family.
Rather than overpowering a dish, Baharat enhances the natural flavours of the ingredients.
What is Lebanese Mix Spice used for?
Lebanese Mix Spice is incredibly versatile and can be used in countless recipes, including:
- Kafta (Lebanese meat skewers)
- Grilled chicken
- Lamb and beef dishes
- Stuffed vegetables
- Rice and pilaf
- Meatballs and burgers
- Soups and stews
- Lentil dishes
- Roasted vegetables
- Minced meat for kibbeh, sambousek and pastries
It’s also delicious sprinkled over scrambled eggs or mixed into marinades for an authentic Middle Eastern flavour.
How do you use Baharat?
Simply season your meat, chicken or vegetables before cooking, or stir it into soups, rice and stews while they simmer. Start with 1–2 teaspoons and adjust to taste depending on the recipe.
Baharat pairs beautifully with olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and fresh herbs.
Is Baharat spicy?
No. Baharat is aromatic rather than hot. It contains warming spices that add depth and complexity without significant heat, making it ideal for everyday cooking.
Is Baharat the same as Lebanese Seven Spice?
Yes. In Lebanon, Baharat is commonly referred to as Lebanese Seven Spice or Lebanese Mix Spice. Although spice blends can vary slightly between producers and family recipes, they all share the same purpose of adding rich, authentic flavour to traditional Middle Eastern dishes.
What can I use instead of Baharat?
If you don’t have Baharat, you can create a similar flavour by combining warming spices such as allspice, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. However, for the most authentic Lebanese taste, a traditional Baharat blend delivers the balanced flavour that’s difficult to replicate at home.
