Premium Sumac – Tangy, Zesty & Essential for Middle Eastern Cooking
Add a burst of vibrant flavour to your meals with our Premium Sumac. Known for its bright, tangy taste and deep burgundy colour, sumac is one of the most loved spices in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine.
Made from dried and ground sumac berries, this versatile spice adds a fresh citrus-like flavour without the acidity of lemon juice, making it the perfect finishing touch for meats, salads, dips and vegetables.
Whether you’re preparing traditional Lebanese dishes or simply looking to brighten everyday meals, sumac is a pantry essential.
What is sumac?
Sumac is a spice made from the dried and ground berries of the sumac plant. It has been used for centuries throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean to add a naturally tangy, citrus-like flavour to food.
Its vibrant colour and refreshing taste make it one of the signature spices in Lebanese cooking.
What does sumac taste like?
Sumac has a bright, tangy flavour that is often compared to lemon, but with a milder, fruitier finish. It is slightly tart, refreshing and aromatic without being overpowering.
Unlike chilli, sumac adds acidity and freshness rather than heat.
What is sumac used for?
Sumac is incredibly versatile and is commonly used in:
- Fattoush salad
- Hummus
- Labneh
- Grilled chicken
- Lamb and beef
- Kebabs and kafta
- Roasted vegetables
- Rice dishes
- Seafood
- Salad dressings
- Marinades
It is also delicious sprinkled over avocado toast, eggs, chips and popcorn for a fresh burst of flavour.
How do you use sumac?
Sumac is most often used as a finishing spice. Simply sprinkle it over cooked meats, salads, dips or vegetables just before serving.
It can also be mixed into marinades, dressings and spice rubs, or stirred into yoghurt for a quick and flavourful dip.
Is sumac spicy?
No. Sumac is not spicy. It has a tangy, citrus-like flavour rather than heat, making it suitable for the whole family.
Is sumac the same as za’atar?
No. Sumac is a single spice made from dried berries, while za’atar is a traditional Middle Eastern spice blend that often includes sumac along with herbs such as thyme, oregano and sesame seeds.
Although sumac is an important ingredient in many za’atar blends, they are not the same product.
What can I use instead of sumac?
If you don’t have sumac, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice can provide a similar tangy flavour, although it won’t offer the same rich colour or subtle fruity notes. For authentic Middle Eastern recipes, sumac delivers a flavour that is difficult to replicate.
Can you eat sumac raw?
Yes. Sumac is commonly sprinkled directly onto finished dishes without cooking. It is equally delicious used raw or added during cooking.
How should sumac be stored?
Store sumac in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Proper storage helps preserve its vibrant colour and fresh, tangy flavour.
